Force Recon Platoon - Video
The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)'s Force Recon Platoon (FRP) conducts a vessel board search and seizure training mission on a U.S. Naval vessel. Force Recon Marines are an MEU's in-house special operations force. They carry out deep reconnaissance operations and direct action operations such as VBSS - including against non-compliant vessels such as pirate-held ships - and raids on targets on land.
Force Recon have retaken pirate-held ships on a number occasions, including in June 2011 when a FRP boarding team from USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) retook the Japanese-owned merchant vessel, MV Guanabara after it had been boarded by pirates off Somalia.
