Soldiers with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment provide security during an airborne training exercise, March 2014.
The Rangers are deployed with a Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV).
The GMV is a modified HMWWV that is crewed by a driver and a gunner (here manning a blank-fire adapted M2 .50 cal machine gun).
The open nature of the vehicle allows for each passenger to cover a wide sector, providing all round arcs of fire.
tailored to the Ranger's specifications.
Note the MK-19 40mm automatic grenade launcher mounted on the vehicle.
GMVs can be air dropped under parachutes, transported in C-130 and C-17 aircraft (like the one visible in the background) and in MH-47 Chinooks - although the tires have to be let down and even then it's a tight gift.
The Rangers-specific variant of the GMV is the GMV-R.
