Note the M240L machine gun carried by the foremost Ranger. The M240L is a variant of the 7/62x51mm M240 that is especially suitable for airborne forces such as the Rangers. It is 5lbs lighter than the M240B, and features a collapsible buttstock. The weapon can be mounted on a tripod, fired from the shoulder or from the prone position, supported by a fold-down bipod.
Ranger machine gun squads consist of 3 2-man gun teams, providing suppressive fire support at the platoon level.
