Recon Marines are trained to expert levels in small boat operations, scout swimming, assault climbing, demolitions, close combat skills, initial terminal guidance operations for heliborne assaults, airborne, surface and sub-surface insertion and extraction techniques, forward observer procedures for supporting arms, airborne insertion operations, and various waterborne operations.
Recon Marines in the Reconnaissance Battalions hold the military occupational specialty (MOS) of 'Reconnaissance Man, Parachute and Combatant Diver Qualified' (MOS 0326) as well as qualified as MOS 0321 ('Reconnaissance Man').
Force Recon Marines, who typically undergo additional training in both parachute insertion and diving are qualified to MOS 0321 standard and have the MOS of 'Reconnaissance Man, Parachute and SCUBA/UBA Qualified' (MOS 8654).
