A Recon Marine with the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, pictured holding a Type 58 assault rifle during Korean Marine Exchange Program 15-3 at Gimpo, Republic of Korea.
The Type 58 is a North Korean (DPRK) derivation of the Soviet-designed AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle.
It fires a 7.62mmx39mm cartridge.
The weapon has been in DPRK service since 1958.
It is slightly longer that the AK-47 rifle it derives from and is available in fixed and folding-stock variants.
