A marksman with Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow Special Reaction Team (SRT) ;peers through the scope of a MK 11 semi-automatic sniper rifle during an active shooter exercise.

SRT marksmen-observers typically operate in pairs, with one acting in as a shooter, the other as a spotter / recorder.

There may be 2 such pairs in a SRT cover element.

The cover element's role is to provide overwatch and cover fire for the SRT entry element during its approach and initial entry of an objective.

SRT snipers establish a fixed overwatch position from where they can carry out surveillance of an objective, providing the team leader with real-time intelligence.

If the situation demands it, they may use their precision engagement skills to neutralize a hostile target.

SRT marksmen-observers receive initial training during Phase 2 of the Military Police Special Reaction Team course at US Army Military Police School, Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

Once assigned to a SRT, they receive regular refresher training.
