An American Special Forces soldier uses an infrared laser pointer and illuminator device mounted on his rifle to scan for enemy activity during a night op in Afghanistan.
Devices such as the PEQ-15 emit an infrared or visible search light and/or aiming device.
When wearing Night Vision Goggles (NVGs), the user can use the infrared modes to search and area / point at a target without giving away their position to non-nvg-equipped enemy.
