Marines with Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) undergo pre-deployment training in an M-ATV mine protected vehicle.
The M-ATV is a relatively light Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle.
It is designed to protect its occupants from the blast from mines and IEDs while being maneuverable enough to quickly negotiate rough terrain such as that found in Afghanistan.
MRAPs such as the M-ATV have replaced the HMMWV / GMV in use by U.S. special ops units in Afghanistan.
