A Navy SEAL takes aim with a Mk 48 machine gun while on winter warfare training.
The Mk 48 is a belt-fed machine gun, chambered in 7.62 x 51mm and is a variant of the 5.56 x 45mm M249 squad automatic weapon (SAW). The Mk 48 was developed for the SEALs and has replaced the Mk43 Mod 0 in the teams as the go-to man-carried machine-gun. The SEAL pictured here is using a flexible feed chute connected to a backpack containing hundreds of rounds of linked ammunition. With access to 500 rounds without the need to change a belt, the system allows a single SEAL to provide sustained suppressive fire.
