Marines with the 3rd MSOB, MARSOC, paddle a Klepper folding canoe during a training exercise.
The use of canoes by special operations forces goes back to World War 2 and the same type of craft are still in use with MSOB, Force Recon and SEAL teams.
Canoes are steathy, quiet and lightweight and can operate in very shallow waters.
One such operation in December 1992 saw Marines with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company employ Klepper canoes to reach their objectives along the Somali coastline before an amphibious landing by the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
