M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle
The M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle (ESR) is a recent addition to the U.S. Army's inventory of sniper rifles. Essentially a reconfigured and upgraded M24 SWS, the M2010 has become the standard U.S. Army sniper rifle. Note: the weapon was initially designated as the XM2010.
Like many other sniper rifles, the M2010 is based around the Remington 700. Unlike the M24 SWS, the upgraded M2010 is rechambered for the .300 Winchester Magnum (Win Mag) round. The extra range afforded by the switch to .300 Winmag will enable soldiers to better engage Taliban insurgents who often will open fire from high up mountain sides, thus using gravity to give them a range advantage.
The M2010 has been fielded by the U.S. Army, including the Special Forces, in Afghanistan from early 2011.
